Food stains

Food stains would be another reason why there is yellow staining on your marble. Because marble is a porous natural material and it can absorb the moisture and acidity from foods and this will cause your marble countertop to show yellow stains. 

The reason it shows up as a yellowish-brown stain is that the acidity in the foods has eaten away the sealant that protects the marble from absorbing any kind of moisture. Once the seal has been penetrated the iron oxides in the marble make their way to the surface and show up as a yellow stain.

If there’s enough iron oxides present the staining will be substantial.

The thing to remember about marble countertops is that the marble has a sealer on it, and overtime harsh and abrasive cleaners can wear off the sealer and this allows the moisture, as well as other materials, to be absorbed into the porous marble and this will cause oxidation.

Over time normal wear and tear will show up on your marble if you don’t maintain it diligently.

How to fix a chip in marble countertop edge

The way to fix a marble countertop is to first obtain a marble chip repair kit. These kits come with all you will need to repair the edge of your marble countertop.

The kit will contain epoxy so that you can attach the two pieces together.

Different kits and different methods can be used when looking for products to fix a chip in your marble countertop. The first thing is to locate the chip if at all possible to place it back in the damaged area. If this isn’t possible you will have to take another route in fixing the chip.

• Find the chip so that it can be replaced
• Mask off the area to be repaired with painter’s tape
• Clean the area with a non-abrasive cleaner, and allow it to dry
• Following the instructions on the epoxy, apply the epoxy and fit the two pieces together, allow to dry
• Remove painter’s tape and clean the surface with a non-abrasive cleaner

If you were not able to find the chipped piece.

• Purchase a color-match kit with marble dust
• You can make a barrier with tape, or a piece of linoleum, to create the edge
• Mix the epoxy with the color material
• Pull the paste into a syringe and inject it into the mould you made
• Allow setting for 24 hours.
• Remove the mould and gently sand with a very fine sandpaper
• Wipe the surface clean and use a marble polish to touch up the area

What Cleaners Can I Use on My Marble Countertop?

LCA Kits

Utilising new technology to repair your marble countertop might feel somewhat daunting, but with these kits, you can save yourself the $35 – $85 an hour you would pay to have a professional come in and repair the corner of your marble countertop.

What can damage a marble countertop?

Your marble countertop can be damaged if something heavy bumps up against it or if something serious is dropped on it. It is better to use caution and to be careful when placing heavier objects near the edge of your marble countertop.

Even under the best of circumstances accidents can happen. Hitting your marble countertop edge with a piece of kitchen equipment, a heavy pan or a heavy utensil can happen.

• Using the wrong cleaner. Using the wrong cleaners such as any cleaner that are acidic will damage your marble countertop. • Standing or sitting on the edge. Marble is resistant to many things but it is also brittle. Because marble is not flexible, it’s not a good idea to add too much pressure to the edges. Some countertops use a backer board but marble generally does not.

Marble is easy to chip if proper care and caution are not used. Marble may seem like it would be indestructible, but it is relatively easy to chip. Placing heavy objects down heavily close to the corner of your marble counter edge can cause chipping.

It may seem that because marble is considered a natural stone it would be hard as a rock. The truth is that while it is more scratch-resistant and heat-resistant, and stain-resistant and crack-resistant it is not without the possibility of chipping, cracking, or breaking.

• Thoroughly clean the area you are working on.
• If the hole is substantial you may need to add some filler,
• Mix the 2-part epoxy resin by following the manufacturer’s instructions. If you mix too much hardener in with the resin you won’t have time to work the mixture before it sets up.
• Add the color to the mixture at the recommended time
• Allow the surface to dry completely where you did your repair
• After allowing the hole to dry completely, you can use steel wool to gently sand the surface and smooth out any imperfections on the surface.
• Wipe the area clean and check for smoothness. If it’s to your satisfaction you can use a marble polishing product to finish the repair.

A DIY baking soda paste can be used to clean turmeric stains from granite countertops.

Baking soda pastes work wonders on many things, and this homemade potion can go a long way in helping clean up some turmeric stains. You can do this by mixing a spoonful of baking soda and enough water to form a thick paste. 

Ensure this is mixed well together. Apply the paste to the turmeric stain and let sit for around 10 minutes. After the paste has worked its magic, gently scrub the stained area in a consistent circular motion using a damp cloth or soft brush.

Rubbing alcohols, including hand sanitizers containing alcohol, can also be used to clean turmeric stains from granite countertops.

Rubbing alcohol is a powerful disinfectant often used for daily household cleaning. The very nature of this product is to clean. Using a small cloth, rub the alcohol into the stain in a circular motion. Add more pressure and repeat as necessary to tackle the bothersome stain.

Ensure you wash your hands with warm soapy water after use of these products.

Watered down vinegar

Diluted vinegar is another household liquid that can be used to clean turmeric stains from marble countertops.

The acidic nature of vinegar gives it great properties for breaking down dirt and grime, removing deposits and stains, therefore making it a very good and helpful household cleaner that’s never too far away.

To prevent etching, acidic substances such as lemon juice, wine, and vinegar should be cleaned immediately from the marble surface and use coasters or placemats under acidic drinks.

Efflorescence 

1. Mix a solution of 1 part muriatic acid to 10 parts water. Wear gloves and eye protection when using muriatic acid.
2. Apply the solution to the stain and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
3. Scrub the white with a stiff-bristled brush or a white scrub pad. Gently scrub to avoid scratching the surface of your marble.
4. Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth.
5. Neutralise the acid by rinsing the area with water and dry the area thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth.

 Scratches that appear on your solid surface countertop can be put into two categories.

• Light scratch
• Deep scratch

Each of these two types of scratches can be removed and repaired using the following techniques.

For light scratches, you can use a Scotch Brite pad. There are different grits of pads so be sure to use a fine grit that isn’t too abrasive. 

Using water and keeping the surface wet, you will simply work the area in a circular motion until the scratches have disappeared. Wipe with a cloth to finish. If the finish at this point looks a bit cloudy you can treat the area with some vaseline and then wipe clean. 

For deeper scratches, a bit more effort will need to be made. You will be starting with dry sandpaper and finishing with wet sandpaper. The sandpaper comes in different grits and they will progressively become finer as the process goes on. 

Through the process of sanding you will have to work your way out from the scratch and feather in the surface area with sandpaper. 

This will give you a more even finish. You will have to use an orbital sander to do this job and the grit of the first sandpaper will depend on the depth of the scratch. Once the scratch has been diminished the feathering or blending in of the area can begin.

Avoid hard-bristled brushes and brillo pads for this very reason. You don’t want to damage the area you’re trying to clean.  

Baking Soda Paste

Preferably avoidable due to its abrasive nature, but baking soda pastes can work wonders on many things and this homemade potion can also help in the removal of limescale. You can do this by mixing a spoonful of baking soda and enough water to form a thick paste.

Ensure this is mixed well together. Apply the paste to the limescale and let sit for around 15 minutes. After the paste has worked its magic, gently scrub the stained area in a consistent circular motion using a damp soft cloth or soft-bristled brush. 

You may need to repeat this process until the limescale is fully gone. Ensure to clean up any debris and mess after use with a clean cloth and warm water. 

Always rinse and dry the area after cleaning. Drying is importance personified.

Other mineral deposits include magnesium. All good for consumption but again these countertops require constant maintenance to prevent staining, erosion and discolouration and build-up. Especially if you live in a hard water area with no water softener installed. 

Poultice

This old-school term and method of mixing up a herbal paste was often used for healing skin injuries. However, the previously mentioned Baking Soda Paste can be used as a modern poultice method to help draw moisture and minerals from the granite. 

This is to be left on the scaled areas and covered by a plastic wrap or similar for between 24 and 48 hours. Once hardened and the time is up, remove the poultice carefully with a soft scraper. Even an old credit card or window scraper would do.

Drying

After any cleaning solution or process, always dry! Dry! Dry! This is the last step in maintaining that any build-up is kept at bay and drying your surfaces is so integral to this.

These methods are great for removing hard water buildup from granite countertops but when possible, speak to an expert. 

How to Remove Wax from Granite Countertops [3 Methods]

As a general rule granite is sturdy and rigid but a granite countertop will chip if impacted with a hard object. Corners are especially susceptible and vulnerable to chipping when put under extreme pressure or because of misuse. The lifespan of a granite countertop is 100 years if properly maintained. 

How to fix granite countertop chip

To fix a chipped granite countertop you can utilize a repair kit specially made for chipped countertops. The kit will contain a two-part epoxy gel that can be color matched and applied to the damaged area. . Follow these steps to fix a granite countertop chip.

1. Clean Chipped Area

The first thing you will want to do is clean the surrounding area and the chipped area. Make sure to use the proper cleaning solution, such as acetone or paint thinner, or to be safe if you don’t have the proper solutions, a mild detergent and water will work. Allow the repair area to dry completely. Remember, never use bleach to clean your granite countertop. 

2. Mix Epoxy and Color

Put a small amount of the epoxy onto a flat surface such as a paper plate, this will make it easier to mix. If it’s necessary you can add a colored pigment and match the color of your countertop. In some kits, pigments are sold separately. 

3. Add Hardener

The hardener can come as a hardening spray or as a second solution in a two-step epoxy or as an ultraviolet light that activates and hardens the epoxy. Follow the directions for the hardening process.

Apply Colored Epoxy 

Fill the chipped area with the colored epoxy that matches your granite countertop, and allow it to dry. Depending on the size of the chip, you can use packing tape or masking tape to border the chipped area to help keep the epoxy where it’s needed.

After you have filled the chipped area with the colored epoxy and the hardening process has started, allow the epoxy to set. Cure time is generally 12- 24 hours.

Scrape and Sand 

Once the epoxy and hardener have dried completely you can take a razor blade and gently scrape the chipped area, removing any excess epoxy. Use a wet/dry sandpaper starting with 600 grit and gently sand the area. Follow with 1000 grit and then 2000 grit wet sandpaper to achieve the final finish. 

Polish 

The final step is to use a granite countertop polish. Use only a recommended polish for this final step to bring your granite countertop back to its original luster. You can hand polish or use an electric buffer if you have one.

Side note: Different types of epoxy repair kits have different hardening methods, such as LCA (Light Cure Crylic), or a spray hardener. Some kits allow for rapid drying and curing.

Granite is one of the most durable materials used to make countertops but under extreme conditions, it can be broken.  When a  piece of your granite countertop has been broken off you can reattach it with an epoxy glue. 

Clean the Pieces

Clean both pieces with a small amount of acetone on a paper towel. Make sure that the acetone has fully evaporated before proceeding to the next step. 

Mix and Apply Epoxy 

Follow the directions for mixing the epoxy compound and apply the mixture to both pieces. Make sure that both pieces are completely covered and stick the two pieces together. Hold the pieces together for a few minutes to make sure that the adhesive has had time to bond. 

Some excess compound may ooze out but you can wipe it away with a paper towel that has been lightly moistened with acetone. Allow the two pieces to completely cure before going on to the next step. Curing time varies, 12-24 hours is recommended. 

Scrape off Excess Epoxy

Once the epoxy has completely cured and set up you can use a razor blade to scrape off any excess epoxy. 

Sand and Polish

Use a wet/dry sandpaper to smooth the surface starting with 600 grit and progressing up to 2000 grit until the desired smoothness is achieved. Once the level of smoothness is achieved you will want to seal and polish the area with a recommended granite polish. 

It is well known that epoxy is the best adhesive for repairing granite due to its ability to withstand stress for long periods of time, its overall adhesiveness, and its durability. For chip repair, it is a superior compound.
