To remove surface burns from a solid surface countertop you can use baking soda and water along with fine steel wool. This type of burn may come from cigarettes or possibly a curling iron, nothing too deep just some surface scorching.

Make a paste from the baking soda and water and gently scrub the surface until the burn is gone. You can use whitening toothpaste to bring back some of the shine and polish your countertop after the burn has been removed.

For deeper burns, another method needs to be used. In the event that there is a deep burn spot, you will need to clean the surface where the burn has taken place by removing the burnt section. You can use a Dremel tool to remove the burn mark and create a small pocket that will need to be filled.

Next, you will match the surface color and paint the hole that you have just created. This way you won’t need to go super deep to get all of the burnt material. This creates the palette for the next step.

You will need to purchase some hard wax for countertop repair. The wax you choose will match the colors of your countertop. You can follow the instructions and apply the wax.

This will bring out a bit of creativity in you to try and match the design of your countertop and restore the surface where you removed the burnt section. Once you are satisfied with your restoration, a varnish can be used to seal the deal.

There are a few tools you will need to have.

  • Dremel tool
  • Small artist paint brush
  • Soldering iron (to melt the hard wax)
  • Hard wax kit
  • Paints
  • Varnish

How to prevent burn marks from staining my Solid Surface

Prevention is the best way to keep from staining your Solid Surface and here are a few suggestions that may help you avoid burn marks.

  • Hot Mats
  •  Trivets
  • Heat Shields

Hot Mats

Placing a hot mat underneath pots and pans can save you from the possibility of burn mark stains. When your lasagna comes out of the oven don’t place it directly on the countertop surface, use a hot mat. Even though the Solid Surface countertop is heat resistant , it is not indestructible.

Trivets

Trivets are another way to protect your countertop from burn stains. Trivets come in all shapes, sizes and styles. They not only protect your countertop but can add some decor style to your mealtime.

Heat Shields

Heat shields can be anything that creates a space between a super hot item and your countertop. There are shields that can go under appliances that sit on your countertop. These shields give you some added protection. These shields can be made of ceramic, silicone, cork or bamboo.

Placing a heat shield between your waffle iron, toaster oven or curling iron can protect your countertop.

How to remove scratches from solid surface countertop

Scratches that appear on your solid surface countertop can be put into two categories.

  • Light scratch
  • Deep scratch

Each of these two types of scratches can be removed and repaired using the following techniques.

For light scratches, you can use a Scotch Brite pad. There are different grits of pads so be sure to use a fine grit that isn’t too abrasive.

Using water and keeping the surface wet, you will simply work the area in a circular motion until the scratches have disappeared. Wipe with a cloth to finish. If the finish at this point looks a bit cloudy you can treat the area with some vaseline and then wipe clean.

For deeper scratches, a bit more effort will need to be made. You will be starting with dry sandpaper and finishing with wet sandpaper. The sandpaper comes in different grits and they will progressively become finer as the process goes on.

Through the process of sanding you will have to work your way out from the scratch and feather in the surface area with sandpaper.

This will give you a more even finish. You will have to use an orbital sander to do this job and the grit of the first sandpaper will depend on the depth of the scratch. Once the scratch has been diminished the feathering or blending in of the area can begin.

How to prevent your solid surface countertop from scratching

Prevention is always better than restoration and to prevent scratching on your solid surface countertop you can follow these few rules.

Avoid the following

  • Abrasive cleaners
  • Sharp knives

Use the following

  • Potholders
  • Heat shields
  • Coasters
  • Trivets
  • Cutting boards

In this post, we’ll be going over which countertops you can cut/chop on and ones you can chop on.

So, let’s jump into this.

Can you cut on butcher block countertops?

Yes, you can cut on butcher block countertops. Butcher block countertops are the only countertops that are made to be cut on and used as a kitchen surface for food preparation. But, though it’s safe to use to cut on, it will incur scratches and dents over time.

Butcher block countertops give a wonderful rustic feel to a kitchen. Those who live in cottages or those who love to cook enjoy the natural look and feel of butcher block countertops. People like them because of the fact they’re the only countertop where it’s completely safe to use knives and use as a cutting surface, for example when preparing food.

Although you can cut on butcher block countertops, this isn’t to say they won’t get damaged. While they’re easy on the knives and won’t get blunted by the countertop, butcher block countertops are susceptible to scratches, marks, and stains.

Can you cut on granite countertops?

No, you should not cut on granite countertops. While granite is extremely tough and durable, it’s not scratch-proof. And, because the surface is porous, if it does get scratched or dented from cutting on it, it becomes more susceptible to stains. We recommend always using a chopping board when cutting on granite countertops.

Granite is an exceptionally durable natural stone that’s popular for its natural hardiness and style. Granite countertops are particularly fashionable in the modern kitchen. And, like anyone who uses a kitchen, you’re likely going to want to prepare food and use knives to cut on these surfaces. Granite is scratch-resistant, but not scratch-proof.

This means that while you can cut on granite countertops, you risk scratching or denting the granite surface. And you’re likely to damage or blunt the knives over time. Also, because granite is a porous material, these scratches, dents, and cuts can make granite countertops easier to penetrate.

This means acidic foods and beverages and harsh chemicals can more easily stain and cause discolouration. Because of these factors, we recommend always using a chopping board when you want to cut and prepare food and other things on granite countertops.

Can you cut on quartz countertops?

Yes, you can cut on quartz countertops. Quartz is one of the toughest natural stones around. It’s scratch-resistant, and it’s very difficult to scratch, even with daily use. But, it’s not completely scratch-proof, so there’s still a chance of it becoming scratched with heavy use.

Quartz countertops are famous for their extreme durability. The natural stone is tough, non-porous, natural, and combined with other materials like resins during the manufacturing process to create it even stronger. For this reason, it’s a popular choice to use as countertops.

And while quartz is scratch-resistant, it’s not scratch-proof. You can cut on quartz, but we recommend you use a chopping board to be safe. Just like with granite countertops, use a chopping board if you want to cut on quartz and avoid scratches, nicks, and cuts

Can you cut on epoxy countertops?

Yes, you can cut on epoxy countertops. Epoxy is an extremely strong, durable, and long-lasting countertop surface that can handle everyday use it isn’t easy to scratch or mark with cutlery or sharp objects.

Epoxy countertops are made from a combination of resin and hardener. The finished product is a glossy, tough finish, and it’s particularly good to be used as countertop surfaces. It’s non-toxic, heat-resistant, easy to clean, and extremely durable. Epoxy countertops are some of the most durable.

Because of the combination of materials used to create epoxy countertops, it’s scratch-resistant. But, like granite and quartz, this does not mean scratch-proof. While it would be difficult to scratch the surface, and light use of cutlery should be OK, we still recommend using something underneath like a wooden board, just to be safe. avoided because it’s still possible.

Can you cut on Corian countertops?

No, you should not cut on Corian countertops. Corian countertops aren’t as strong or durable as many other countertop surfaces. They’re particularly easy to mark and scratch and chip. Even daily use can cause abrasions. Use a surface underneath to cut with on these countertops.

Corian countertops can imitate the look and feel of more expensive countertops, such as granite and quartz. They’re inexpensive, too. And while they come in many different colour patterns, are durable, and are easy to clean, they have a lot of negative aspects, including being easy to mark and scratch.

For this reason, you should not cut on Corian countertops. Corian, while durable, is susceptible to nicks and scratches, and even regular daily use can cause abrasions.

Can you cut on marble countertops?

Yes, you can cut on marble countertops, but if you wish to maintain their beauty, we recommend that you cut on them using a chopping board or other surfaces. This is because marble is a softer stone that is more susceptible to nicks and cuts than other more durable stones like quartz.

Marble countertops are beautiful and give an old-world feel to homes with their natural beauty. As a natural stone, marble is generally more affordable than granite or quartz. But, marble isn’t as durable as either granite or quartz.

Marble is a softer stone, like limestone, and therefore more susceptible to damage, including scratches and damage from heat and stains from acidic foods and beverages. You shouldn’t cut on marble for this reason. It’s much more likely to scratch and gets dented with regular use. Use a cutting board or another surface if you wish to cut on this type of countertop.

Can you cut on soapstone countertops?

No, you should not cut on soapstone countertops. Although denser than some other materials, soapstone is a soft stone, and cutting on it can easily cause scratches, dents, chips, and other damage. But a positive is that scratches can more easily be removed than other materials by sanding down.

Soapstone is denser than quartz or granite, but not as strong or durable. It’s a softer stone, and though you can technically cut on it, you shouldn’t if you wish to avoid scratches, cuts, dents, and other damage cutlery can cause.

But a positive to soapstone is that it can be easily sanded down. This means that if you do decide to cut on a soapstone countertop surface, light scratches and dents can be removed by sanding them down.

What to Put Under A Counter to Protect it

Can you cut on concrete countertops?

Yes, you can cut on concrete countertops. Concrete countertops are strong and durable and you can cut on them. But they can still scratch and chip with heavy use. You can apply a sealant to concrete to make it stronger. Still, to be safe, we recommend using a chopping board if you want to use cutlery.

Concrete is a strong and durable surface. It’s stronger than softer stones like soapstone, but not as strong as granite or quartz. It’s resilient to scratches, and cutting on these surfaces is unlikely to scratch or damage it. Concrete countertops can be sealed, too, which adds to their toughness.

But, to maintain concrete countertops, we recommend you don’t cut on these surfaces directly. Concrete is quite easily chipped, too, which large sharp knives can cause.
