Garage Door Opener Flashing/Blinking/Flickering

Do you want to know why your garage door opener is flashing/blinking/flickering?

That’s exactly what I’ll be going over in this post, so let’s get straight into it!

Why is my garage door opener flashing yellow?

A flashing yellow light on a garage door opener usually indicates that there is an issue with the safety sensors. The sensors are designed to detect if there is an object in the path of the closing door, and when something is detected the lights will flash yellow.

The light colors differ from model to model, and the best way to determine the actual reason for a yellow flashing would be to check the troubleshooting section of your owner’s manual. However, in this case, let’s use the sensors as an example.

How to fix this

To fix a flashing yellow light on a garage door opener indicating a problem with the safety sensors:

Check for worn-out or frayed wires that run to your sensors, this might be where you can find the problem. Over time the wires can get brittle or something is bumped up against them and they are pulled loose. If the wires are disconnected, unplug the garage door before proceeding. You don’t want to get a shock.

If it turns out they are old and unrepairable you might need to replace the wires.

Why is my garage door opener flashing green?

A green flashing light on a garage door opener typically indicates that the door is in use. This light will flash when the door is opening or closing. When the door is fully open or fully closed, the green light should stop flashing and remain steady.

Depending on the model a continuous flashing green light can mean that there are issues with the wi-fi connection. Or if the green light continues to flash after the door has stopped moving, it may indicate a problem with the opener or the door itself. In this case, you may need to seek the assistance of a professional.

How to fix this

To fix a garage door opener that is continually flashing green light and you have a  wi-fi controlled opener, you will need to perform a power cycle. The power cycle consists of disconnecting and reconnecting the power source. Basically turning it off and on.

You can begin the power cycle by disconnecting the opener first and then reconnecting to see if the Wi-Fi connects. If not move to the next power cycle step of disconnecting the opener and the route

Allow a minute for the router to reboot and check the LED light and see if you have a solid green light.

Garage Door Not Opening Properly | Causes & Fixes

Why is my garage door opener flashing red?

A red flashing light on a garage door opener typically indicates an error or problem with the opener. The exact meaning of a red flashing light can vary depending on the specific model of the opener, but it is usually an indication that there is an issue that needs to be addressed.

Some common causes of a red flashing light include;

  • Sensor issues
  • Motor issues
  • Power issues

Generally, it will be a sensor issue and a few minor adjustments will have your door functioning properly again in no time.

How to fix this

To fix a red flashing light on a garage door opener, follow these steps:

  • Adjusting and tightening the screws on the sensor brackets
  • Cleaning the sensor lenses
  • Check the door for obstructions

If it turns out that the sensors aren’t the culprit after adjusting the screws, tightening the brackets and cleaning the lenses, then there are other troubleshooting steps you can follow and checking your owners manual is recommended.

Other problems that you may encounter are obstructions, corroded pulleys, or bad rollers. A visual inspection can be done, for the pulleys and rollers, but it might be better to contact a professional and let them find out the issue.

Why is my garage door opener flashing blue?

A blue flashing light on a garage door opener is typically an indication of a feature or function being used, rather than a problem or error. Some garage door openers have a blue LED light that indicates that the door is connected to a Bluetooth device, such as a smartphone or tablet, and that it is in pairing mode.

The Smart controls for your opener need to be in sync, check to make sure that the hub and the opener are plugged in. If the light continues to blink, unplug each of them and then plug them back in. Wait to see if the blue light goes solid.

How to fix this

Check the device’s Bluetooth settings and make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on the device you are trying to connect to the opener and that it is in pairing mode. Check the Wi-Fi hub to make sure it is plugged in.

Moving the device closer to the opener may help because the closer the device is to the opener, the stronger the Bluetooth signal will be.If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be helpful to consult the manufacturer’s manual or seek the assistance of a professional.

Apps are available to be able to open and close your garage door from your smartphone but you need to have the proper router and the router has to be within the required range for it to work properly. If the requirements are met then you can expect to see the blue blinking light.

Why is my garage door opener blinking orange?

A blinking orange LED on your opener may indicate a low battery. It may be accompanied by a beeping sound every thirty seconds. A premium garage door opener will come with a battery backup in case of a power outage.

Understanding the flashing codes can save you time and money. Before you opt to call a technician check your owner’s manual as to what each light means.

How to fix this

Since we have determined that the flashing orange light may indicate a low battery, then checking the power source is a good idea. If there hasn’t been a power outage then your opener may well be unplugged.

Nevertheless, the battery should be checked or changed to make sure that you don’t get stuck in or out of your garage during a power outage.

Garage Door Openers Direct Drive – Pros & Cons

Why is my garage door opener light staying on?

The garage door light is staying on because the light switch may have been manually activated. The motion sensors are picking something up and the automatic light is being triggered or the switch at the panel has been left on.

Garage door lights are activated in several ways. When the door is opened or when it is being shut the light will come on to give you time to find your keys or get to the inside house door, all before the light goes out.  There is nothing like being stuck in a dark garage fumbling to find the door or the light switch.

There are also motion detector sensors that can be activated when something is triggering them. Most sensors are ultrasonic and are activated by sound frequency. When the sound waves are disrupted then the sensors detect an obstruction. If they are malfunctioning they can continue to send a message to the opener to keep the light on.

Another possibility as to why your garage door light stays on is that you just might have  forgotten to turn off the manual switch at the panel,

How to fix this

The best you can hope for is the light switch being left on and the worst is that the automatic sensors are malfunctioning or in need of replacing.

You can check the motion sensors from the control board by going through a series of tests. Follow the directions as they are given. If the diagnostics tests and the control board doesn’t reveal any abnormalities, the wiring might be what is causing the issue.  How the wires are connected and where they are connected to the control board can cause the lights to stay on.

If you’re not comfortable with electrical wiring and don’t wish to mess with the control board then contacting a door professional would be advised.

Why is my garage door opener pad blinking?

The garage door opener pad, or keypad is designed to blink when there is a problem with the door opening or closing. The blinking may also mean something in the mechanical or electrical is malfunctioning or moving incorrectly. The function is to draw your attention and allow you to be safe.

The blinking keypad is basically a warning sign that something involving the garage door opener is out of whack. It could be as simple as the wrong code being punched in or a battery issue. It’s even possible that radio frequency is being interrupted by other remote devices nearby.

How to fix this

Starting with the wrong number being punched in, you can just try again and use a different number. Sometimes with a single keypad and multiple doors, a sequence is used and if you miss a number or symbol your code will be rejected and the keypad will begin to blink.

However, the manner in which the keypad blinks and the reasons the keypad blinks will vary from model to model and it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the particular blinking sequences of your opener.

Why is my garage door opener remote blinking?

A garage door opener remote blinking can be caused by a variety of issues, including a dead battery, radio frequency interference, being out of range, or a malfunction in the remote or opener system. If the remote is battery-operated, the first step in troubleshooting is to replace the battery.

A blinking garage door opener remote can indicate a problem with the remote or the garage door opener system. Some common causes of a remote blinking include;

  • Dead battery
  • Interference
  • Out of range
  • Malfunction

The first possibility to check when your opener is blinking is the batteries. Popping in a fresh set of batteries might just fix the blinking issue. If that doesn’t work then move on to the next possibility.

The second possibility is that there might be some sort of radio frequency interference. Other devices you might have could be operating on the same radio frequency and this would disrupt the remote signal. A weak signal can cause your remote to blink.

Trying to open the door from too far away will cause your opener remote to blink. You’re almost home, wait until you get closer and try it again. The last possibility is that it’s a malfunctioning remote; the best possible scenario is to just get a replacement.

If you are unsure why your garage door opener remote is blinking, it may be helpful to consult the manufacturer’s manual or seek the assistance of a professional. A professional will be able to diagnose and fix any problems with the remote, ensuring that it operates safely and reliably.

How to fix this

To fix a garage door opener remote that is blinking, try the following steps:

  1. Replace the battery: If the remote is battery-operated which most of them are, the battery may be low or dead, causing the remote to blink. Try replacing the battery to see if that resolves the problem.
  1. Frequency interruption: Radio frequency interference from other devices can cause the remote to blink. Devices that have similar frequencies can interrupt the signal to your door If this is the case, try moving the remote away from other devices and see if that resolves the issue. Resetting the code manually might help as well. If the interference persists you may need to upgrade your system.
  1. Move closer to the opener: On average a garage door opener remote has a range of about 50 feet. If the remote blinks and you aren’t in the range it’s going to blink at you, you can try again once you get to your driveway and see if that works.
  1. Malfunctioning remote: If the batteries are new, and you’re sitting in your garage and the remote is still not working, then you should opt for a new remote. Once you get the new one you will need to program it to your door.
