Why is my Kitchen so Cold? Causes & Fixes

If your home is older, the morning chilliness could be due to inadequate insulation. Another common issue is not enough heat being directed to this area versus other rooms in the house. When temperatures drop at night, the room becomes even colder, making for cold mornings in your kitchen.

Before taking any drastic measures to make your kitchen more comfortable on cold mornings, check your heating system. Verify that all air ducts are open, clean, and clear of anything blocking them. Vents covered by furniture will not work well to heat your kitchen.

Contact an HVAC professional to check the overall health and functionality of your furnace. You may have leaky ducts that need repairs, cleaning, parts replacements, or even simply a filter replacement. Scheduling yearly checks with a professional will help catch any serious issues early on, eliminating the need for costly repairs down the road.

In older homes, directing heat ducts towards the kitchen was not a priority, as many believed a kitchen could easily be warmed with the stove.

During this time before microwave meals, air-fryers, and food delivery services, people spent a lot more time preparing and cooking food in their kitchens.

It is not advised to use ranges as a source of heat due to safety and energy efficiency concerns. If you’re living in an older home, consider calling on a professional to add air ducts to your kitchen.

There are also minimally invasive ways to add insulation to your kitchen walls, which will help retain heat during colder months. It is also a good idea to check the seals around windows, doors, and other openings.

Why is My Basement so Warm? (Top 3 Reasons)

Why is my kitchen floor so cold?

Many of the materials commonly used in kitchens do not retain heat very well. This can cause ice-cold floors, especially in the winter. Possible solutions to eliminate this discomfort include choosing different materials, installing below-surface heating systems, or simply utilizing rugs.

Tiles and natural stones are among the coldest of materials, while also being extremely common in kitchens. However, these materials work wonderfully if you are considering installing a heating system underneath your floor. Other materials to consider if you have the option are cork, vinyl, and laminate.

The easiest solution to cure cold kitchen floors is using rugs. These are a great option if you are renting or do not have the resources for costly remodels or add-ons. Purchase rugs to create a soft barrier for your feet while adding style, personality and color to your kitchen.

Rugs also have the added benefit of providing comfort for your feet when standing for long periods of time doing dishes or cooking. There are even rugs and mats specifically designed to help eliminate pressure on your body while hunching over the sink or countertop for hours on end.

Can You Run A Dishwasher Without Hot Water? Everything You Need to Know

What temperature should your kitchen be?

The ideal temperature for your kitchen depends on your comfort level, but there are extremes you should avoid. Some enjoy a kitchen that is slightly cooler than the rest of the house as running ovens and stoves can create more heat.

Temperatures from 68 degrees to 113 degrees fahrenheit are a breeding ground for bacteria in certain foods. Never leave food sitting out for longer than necessary and keep your kitchen relatively cool throughout hot months.

Why is my house colder than outside?

If your house feels colder than the outdoors, it may be due to bad insulation that allows cold air in and traps it inside. Another reason that your house may feel cold is because you are expending less energy when you spend time indoors.

If you are having issues with your home feeling cold during the winter months, be sure to check the function of your heating system. Make sure all vents are open and clear of any large furniture blocking them.

Upholstery will absorb the heat, meaning that your home is not getting heated effectively. Have an HVAC professional check your furnace to identify any issues that may be preventing it from functionally optimally.

After ensuring that your HVAC is working well, check the exterior of your home for any places where cold air may be seeping in. You may have windows or doors that need to be resealed. It may also be beneficial to add insulation to your home, especially if your house is old.
