Baking soda paste

A DIY baking soda paste can be used to clean turmeric stains from granite countertops.

Baking soda pastes work wonders on many things, and this homemade potion can go a long way in helping clean up some turmeric stains. You can do this by mixing a spoonful of baking soda and enough water to form a thick paste.

Ensure this is mixed well together. Apply the paste to the turmeric stain and let sit for around 10 minutes. After the paste has worked its magic, gently scrub the stained area in a consistent circular motion using a damp cloth or soft brush.

Press harder if you need to. You may need to repeat this process until the stain is fully gone. Ensure to clean up any debris and mess after use with a clean cloth and warm water.

Rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohols, including hand sanitizers containing alcohol, can also be used to clean turmeric stains from granite countertops.

Rubbing alcohol is a powerful disinfectant often used for daily household cleaning. The very nature of this product is to clean. Using a small cloth, rub the alcohol into the stain in a circular motion. Add more pressure and repeat as necessary to tackle the bothersome stain.

Ensure you wash your hands with warm soapy water after use of these products.

Watered down vinegar

Diluted vinegar is another household liquid that can be used to clean turmeric stains from marble countertops.

The acidic nature of vinegar gives it great properties for breaking down dirt and grime, removing deposits and stains, therefore making it a very good and helpful household cleaner that’s never too far away.

Dilute the vinegar with water, creating a small mixture. 2 parts water, 1 part vinegar. Once you’re happy with the ratio, apply the vinegar solution to the stained area. Leave the solution to sit on the stain for 10 minutes, allowing it to work. Remove the solution using a damp cloth, soft brush or even an old toothbrush for more localized cleaning.

Ensure the surface area is clean and washed down with a cloth and warm water.

Why does turmeric stain so easily?

Turmeric contains curcumin which helps towards its bright yellow pigment. Turmeric is also slightly oily and due to this can penetrate fabrics and many other materials.

Whether cooking with turmeric powder or root, any dish containing turmeric can cause unwanted stains and we’ve all seen foods containing turmeric jump from plate to countertop, or even your new white T-shirt.

Due to its vibrant pigment, turmeric can also be used as a coloring agent. Its absorbing and oily nature means that turmeric is not water-soluble and therefore when the stain comes in contact with water there is a high chance the turmeric could spread through the water, making the stain appear worse.
