Are Glass Dining Tables Good? – What You Need to Know

Whether you are looking for something to blend in with your current decor, or you’re looking for a show-stopping statement piece, whether you want an informal dining room or a more sophisticated and dramatic room, you can’t go wrong with a glass-top dining table.

Stylish and elegant, yet at the same time, simple and low-maintenance, glass dining tables have much to offer in any home. When it comes to customizing a dining room, a glass dining table is one of the best and most effective items you could own.

Heat resistance

Tempered glass, with a thickness between 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch thick, can withstand up to 716 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes a glass table top perfect for a kitchen or dining room.

Not only that, but tempered glass can be heated up to 572 degrees Fahrenheit, and then sprayed with ice-cold water and it will not shatter.

Scratch resistance

Tempered glass table stops are more scratch resistant than regular glass.  The process used to make tempered glass not only increases its strength and heat resistance but also makes it highly scratch resistant.

It is always recommended that you use tablecloths or placemats to help preserve the table, and prevent unnecessary scratches and marks.

Do glass tables stain easily?

Glass is non-porous, and while glass tables can get ‘stained’,  it is very easy to clean.

All you need is a wet towel and some cleaning liquid, such as dishwashing liquid, or a white vinegar solution,  to wipe away the stain.

Maintenance

Being non-porous, and water-proof, glass dining tables are the ideal low-maintenance tables.

While regular dusting, wiping down, and buffing of the glass surface is needed, you can also use either a mild marble cleaner, or a mixture of water, rubbing alcohol, and white vinegar to keep your table streak-free and sparkling.

Price

Purchasing a glass dining table can set you back anywhere from $1000 up to $10 000, although generally speaking most tables are in the range of $2000 to $6000.

While it may seem like a lot of money, a glass-top dining table is an investment.

Looks

With an assortment of options available, such as frosted, laminated, or tinted glass, the shape of the glass top, beveled or round edges, and the glass thickness, owning a glass dining table is a lot of fun.

The shape of the tabletop also helps to create an illusion of both space, and intimacy. A square top is perfect for bigger families, with more than enough space to seat everyone while remaining stylish and not overbearing. A round table is better suited to a smaller space, with fewer people, creating a fun yet intimate feel to a room.

Oval and rectangular table tops fit well in a minimalistic room, where the table becomes the focal point.

Another option for you to customize is the overhang of the glass off the table. While some people prefer to have a flush glass top, with a straight or beveled edge cut right to the end of the table frame, some choose to have an overhang.

One does need to remember that the overhang cannot exceed more than one-third of the width of the glass.

Are glass dining tables out of style?

Most people think of a glass dining table belonging to a magazine, they are seen as the height of sophistication and class, however, in recent years, interior design trends have been changing, and glass table tops are the new craze.

With their ability to make a small room feel intimate, and a large room feels fashionable, glass table tops are becoming a timeless piece of furniture in many homes.

Are glass dining tables safe

Tempered, damage-resistant, or toughened glass, which is used for glass dining tables, is four times stronger than regular glass and is made by using controlled chemical and thermal treatments, ensuring increased strength and durability.

Each piece of tempered glass is stamped in a corner with an identifier, which will have the manufacturer’s name and the Consumer Product Safety Commission Standard, making it easy for the regular person to identify whether the piece of glass you are using is indeed tempered and safe.

When tempered glass breaks, it doesn’t shatter into sharp thin shards, but rather, into small granules. Shattering into granules has two main advantages, the first being it makes cleaning up the shattered glass much easier, and the second is that it makes it much safer as there is less chance of cutting yourself.

Benefits of glass dining table

A glass top not only makes a room seem more airy and light, but also makes a room feel bigger than it is, especially if the room is windowless, or wood-paneled.

Glass-top tables are also great for highlighting either a spectacular carpet or wooden floor, as well as showing off the base and legs of the table.

Can you put hot food on a glass table?

Because tempered glass can withstand very high heat, glass table tops work well in a kitchen as hot plates and pots can be placed directly onto the glass without damaging the glass, however, it’s always best to use placemats and tablecloths to help preserve the glass.

A glass table top is very effective in conveying the tone and mood of your room.

It is true that a glass dining table can be expensive, but if you take care of the glass, it is an investment that can last for many years.

The beauty of a glass-top dining table can’t be ignored. A simple table runner, a cut glass vase with flowers, and a clean, sparkling glass table make for the perfect picture.

If you are looking for something versatile, something that can make a small, stuffy room feel

much more spacious, something to make your friends and family say “Wow!”, then a glass-top dining table is worth investing in.
