Are Ikea Sofas Good? Review – What You Need to Know

Are you considering getting an Ikea sofa? In this post, I’ll be going over what you need to know, the pros and cons and more

Are IKEA Sofas comfortable?

Absolutely. IKEA sofas are comfortable and depending on your preference, their expansive range will most likely have something that suits your needs.

Nothing beats going home from work and sinking into a comfortable sofa, and an IKEA sofa can provide exactly that for you. Each and every one of us has our own preference of what our comfort levels require but with a range of over 30 different sofa series, without a doubt, IKEA can supply something to your liking.

Whether you’d like something comfortable but supportive or something to plunge right into for the rest of the night, the options are there. Sofas are an investment and you must make sure you choose what’s right for you. If you can, try to do a sit test when looking for your sofa.

Ordering blindly online comes with its risks and if you can go to a store a sit test can determine which sofa style is right for you, in filling and fabric. Comfort is necessary. Check, test and choose wisely.

You may already know what you like and that can be down to materials and fillings. Whether you find comfort in a sleek velvet sofa to cuddle into or natural hard-wearing leather, IKEA’s choices have you covered. This also applies to the filling of your sofa.

Fibre and foam fillings are very different, with foam seating providing significantly more support in your sofa. More support doesn’t mean a lack of comfort, but if you want something less rigid, fibre-filled sofas will be the way to go, giving you a softer and objectively comfortable seat.

Why Are Sofas So Expensive? 5 Reasons & Alternatives

How long do IKEA Sofas last?

IKEA sofas should last as their warranty would suggest and if you look after your sofa it should hold up for around 7-13 years with no problem.

With a 10-year guarantee on material and workmanship on these sofas, this should add to confidence that an IKEA sofa purchase will serve its time. On a few select models, this guarantee is upped to 25 years, raising belief levels.

These guarantees, however, are mere guidelines when it comes to how long a sofa can really last. Many factors play a part in the longevity of any furniture type and the amount you use your sofa will play a big part in that. If you plan on purchasing a sofa for your living room for a family of five, this will no doubt see some traffic, and over time wear and tear will happen.

If you purchased the same sofa for a second living area or office room, it may see much less use and ultimately last longer. The performance of an IKEA sofa should very well stand for a number of years. But take usage and how you maintain your sofa into account.

Style options

Designs and styles are always changing. Minimalism, modern and contemporary have been at the forefront in recent years, creating and promoting simplistic and sleek styles. IKEA has relished in the modern design era while still remaining comfortable and making a statement in your living room.

While keeping up with current trends, these contemporary-style sofas can also be considered retro, with older-styled couches being taken through the years and with an updated twist. IKEA has you covered.

Standard Fabric and Leather Sofas

A standard sofa typically comes in anywhere between a small 2-seater to a large 4-seater. These classic sofas are simple with backrests and arms for support. Nothing fancy to be seen here, but the massive selection at IKEA can help you find something that suits your home, your style and your colour scheme.

Modular

Modular sofas are essentially sectional pieces that can be positioned in a multitude of ways to suit your preference or the room’s capability. In some cases, you can move a piece of your sofa from room to room with relative ease without causing too much hassle.

The very idea allows for multiple setups at different times and can be a game-changer in your living space. Modular sofas are the Tetris of sofas.

Chaise Longues/Recliners

Chaise longues are increasingly popular, especially when added to the end of your corner sofa. This sofa extension has become increasingly popular over the years and is a great addition to a corner sofa if you want to put your feet up. With left and right-hand options, these styles of sofas are comfortable and accommodating.

Sofa Beds

Sofa Beds can do it all. Whether it’s a living room staple or spare bed legend, it is what you want it to be. Modern sofa beds are so seamless in transition and often look much like that of a standard sofa that you’d never know the difference.

Not only do they act and look like a regular sofa but come with comfortable and supporting mattresses. Sofa beds are the Transformers of sofas…

Pricing

IKEA has always been known as relatively inexpensive. But there is certainly still a range from what could be considered cheap to expensive. Luckily with such a large range, IKEA can accommodate anyone on a budget. As with most things you buy, the higher price, the higher quality, and vice versa. Always be sure to look for sale and clearance items, there are some amazing bargains to be had!

The lower your budget may determine you to go for a lesser quality sofa but this doesn’t mean it’s bad quality. IKEA uses good quality materials and they try to source them in a cheap and efficient manner.

When purchasing a lower-priced sofa, you often stray away from frames made of high-quality hardwoods and in turn get something made from the likes of particleboard/fiberboard and polyester.

These materials are often recycled and can be very eco-friendly while saving on costs and still performing well. You may sacrifice the top-of-the-range materials, but you still get something very capable.

Is there any setup?

Yes. Self-assembly may be the first thing that pops into your brain when you think of IKEA and many sofas come flat-packed and ready for you to put together.

IKEA’s furniture is designed to be easily transported and assembled. Most of their products require a bit of DIY but that’s not to say you can’t get a professional to do this task for you. If you do want to get your hands on your furniture and place the pieces together yourself, follow the instructions provided with your sofa and this task should be relatively simple. Doing it yourself also saves a couple of pennies and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Any time you order a new piece of furniture, make due it can fit in your home. This doesn’t just mean measuring the place where you want your sofa to live, but it also means ensuring your sofa can fit through any and all doors in your home as well as stairways and around any corners.

Always check packaging and delivery dimensions before you order. With IKEA often coming in flat-packed deliveries, this should rarely be a problem. But, always check.

IKEA Return policy

IKEA has an impressive return policy that allows a customer 365 days to send their sofa back if they are for some reason unhappy with their purchase. As is standard, all returns must have proof of purchase, fire tags attached and original packaging. These items must be as new, not damaged in any way and suitable for resale.

Warranty and Customer Service

IKEA has a 10-year warranty guarantee. This covers mainly the frame and in some cases cushions and materials. These are often manufacturing defects with your purchase. When claiming on the warranty you must also be sure to provide the original proof of purchase.

As well as an online FAQ support system IKEA provides an online chatbot to contact customer service via their website. This service is available 24 hours a day. However, IKEA customer service can also be contacted via telephone Monday to Sunday, at available hours as shown on their website.

What do customers say about IKEA Sofas?

Customers generally praise IKEA sofas, stating many positives and very few issues.

Positive feedback goes a long way with the Swedish furniture giants. Anything from looks to comfort and customer service. Of course, the price also slips into the positive category here with customers praising value for money.

While customers don’t deny the longer their sofas have been in use the more they may fade and sag, most seem overly pleased with how they hold up.

FAQ

Does IKEA use real leather?

Yes. IKEA uses real leather in the form of both Cattle Hide and Goatskin. IKEA does its best to find high-quality products at lower prices and because of this, its leather is purchased from all over the world with almost half of it coming from Brazil. This leather is natural and durable and goes through extensive testing to ensure its first-rate performance.

Can I fit an IKEA couch in my car?

Many IKEA couches should fit into your car, yes. However, depending on the item itself as well as the size of your car this may not be the case. Always be sure to check your packaging dimension and measure your car boot/trunk space before you plan on driving home with a sofa on the roof. If you drive a mini and you’re buying a large corner sofa, probably not. If you drive a big truck, you can maybe deliver a few sofas to your neighbours on your way home.
