Are Marble Countertops Safe? [What You Need to Know]

Yes, marble countertops are safe. Marble is smooth and easy to clean, you can simply use a marble designed cleaner to kill bacteria and germs. It’s also easy to get them with a round edge instead of corners, reducing damage if you bump into the edge.

We go into more depth regarding this topic below…

Porous abilities

One thing to keep in mind with marble counters is that marble is a porous stone material. Therefore, you need to ensure you correctly seal the worktop to avoid making it susceptible to stains and bacteria. The last thing you want is to prepare and make food on a surface loaded with growing bacteria.

Due to marble being a porous material, cracking can occur, and this can be dangerous. Having cracks in the marble, even small ones, can grow in size and become more hazardous. Sliding hands across marble surfaces with cracks can cut your hands and fingers, and bigger chunks of cracked marble are undoubtedly even more concerning.

Properly cleaning and sealing the marble is the best way to ensure these instances don’t occur.

Simply use a specifically designed marble sealer (Amazon).

Corner angle

Your marble countertops could have sharp edges or rounded edges, but this is a choice you need to make.

If you have children, consider rounded edges. Since children love to play and run around, you want to know that the corner angle of your marble countertop isn’t going to cause any severe bodily harm.

Sharp-edged marble countertops can be more dangerous. This is especially true with younger children. Sharp-edged marble can cause severe bodily harm when someone makes contact with them accidentally. The last thing you want is a child, or even an adult, to run into sharpened marble edges.

You can have the edges rounded by talking to the contractor installing the countertop for you.

Heat resistance

One of the best things about marble counters is that marble as a material is fairly heat resistant. So while you wouldn’t want to just throw hot pots and pans on the countertop for nothing, it’s comforting to know that they can withstand the heat to a reasonable extent.

How would I disinfect a marble countertop?

You can quickly disinfect marble countertops with different solutions. A dishcloth with ordinary soap and some hot water or even with a food-safe disinfectant spray. Either option will effectively disinfect your marble countertop.

A specifically designed cleaner for marble is the best option.

The results of the cleaning process are more straightforward or complicated, depending on its sealing status. For example, if you haven’t sealed the marble countertop and resealed it every six months, getting all the dirt and stains out is challenging. However, if you have sealed your countertop and keep up to date with the sealing process, you should have an easier go of it.

Avoid using these cleaning products as they can damage the marble;

  • Windex
  • Bleach
  • Vinegar
  • Abrasive Cleaners or Pads

While there are effortless ways to clean your marble countertop, there are even easier ways to ruin it. So make sure you check first that what you’re planning on using on your expensive and beautiful marble isn’t going to cause any lasting damage.
