In this post, I’ll be showing you how to waterproof a single skin garage step-by-step.

So let’s get into this tutorial!

Fill any gaps in the wall

To waterproof my garage, I filled gaps in the wall with concrete. This ensures complete sealing of any holes, cracks, or gaps and prevents water damage.

However, it’s essential to note that filling gaps with concrete may not be suitable for all walls. In some cases, using caulk is recommended, such as for tiles or in the bathroom, as it’s more flexible and can withstand movement without cracking. 

Before waterproofing, prepare the walls by removing any paint, dust, or plaster for a clean surface. Besides filling gaps, consider other waterproofing methods like applying a waterproof membrane or coating to walls. 

This provides an extra layer of protection against water damage. However, it’s essential to assess the type of wall and gap severity before deciding on the appropriate method to prevent water damage. 

Interestingly, the Biden administration has also been filling gaps in the border wall in Yuma, Arizona, to prevent illegal immigration. While it may seem unrelated, it highlights the importance of gap-filling as a preventative measure in various contexts. 

In summary, carefully evaluate the wall type and gap severity and consider other waterproofing methods for the best protection against water damage.

Apply tanking slurry to the wall

It’s crucial to take extra steps to ensure that your garage is protected from water damage. One of the most effective solutions is to use tanking slurry, which creates a durable barrier against moisture while also being resistant to salts and acids.

To properly apply tanking slurry, it’s necessary to clean the wall and remove any debris to ensure that the slurry can adhere properly. Following the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing the slurry is essential to achieve the right consistency. 

Applying multiple coats of slurry evenly will provide the best protection against moisture, and allowing it to dry fully will create a long-lasting and waterproof layer. To strengthen the coating and provide additional protection against cracks and damage, I decided to add a reinforcing mesh to the wall before applying the slurry. 

The combination of filling gaps with concrete and using tanking slurry with a reinforcing mesh has fully waterproofed my single-skin garage, providing excellent protection against water damage for many years to come. It’s essential to take all necessary precautions to prevent water damage and protect your garage and its contents. 

With the use of tanking slurry and reinforcing mesh, you can have peace of mind knowing that your garage is adequately protected against moisture and potential water damage.

Waterproofing A Garage – A Simple Beginner’s Guide

Waterproofing bottom of garage wall 

To fully waterproof the single skin garage, I also applied a damp proofing liquid called Black Jack to the very bottom of the wall on the exterior.

This liquid is made up of bitumen and solvents that are intended to create a waterproof barrier, which is important in protecting the garage from moisture. To use it, I first cleaned the area thoroughly to make sure that it was free from any debris, dust or dirt. 

Then, I applied the liquid to the bottom of the wall using either a brush or roller, being sure to cover the entire area evenly. By using multiple coats, I was able to ensure that the liquid would be effective at creating a waterproof layer. 

Once the liquid had dried, it created a barrier against moisture that would help to keep the garage dry and protected from water damage.

 Another important step in waterproofing the garage was sealing any gaps or holes around the garage door with weatherstripping. Weatherstripping is a thin material that creates a seal between the door and the garage frame and is made of either rubber or foam. 

By sealing these gaps, I was able to significantly reduce the amount of water that could enter the garage, and therefore protect it from moisture damage. 

To complete the waterproofing process, I also used tanking slurry, which is a waterproofing material that is resistant to salts and acids. This material is applied in multiple coats, ensuring that the wall is completely covered and creating an extra layer of protection against moisture. 

By combining these waterproofing methods, including using Black Jack, weatherstripping, and tanking slurry, I was able to ensure that my single-skin garage was fully waterproofed and protected against water damage. It’s important to take the necessary precautions to prevent moisture damage, as it can lead to costly repairs and other hazards in the future

Beware of condensation

It’s important to be aware of condensation when waterproofing a single skin garage. If the garage is completely insulated, it can cause condensation to form on the walls and roof, leading to dampness and potential water damage.

Waterproofing a single skin garage is not only about filling gaps and applying waterproof coatings but also being aware of the potential for condensation. 

Insulating the garage completely can cause moisture to build up on walls and roofs, leading to dampness and potential water damage. To prevent this, creating ventilation is essential. This can be achieved by installing a vent or leaving a small gap at the top or bottom of the garage door. 

Another option is to create a draft by leaving a window or door slightly open, allowing air to circulate and preventing condensation from forming. It is also important to consider the insulation material used in the garage. 

Some materials, such as fibreglass, can trap moisture and contribute to condensation. Choosing insulation that is resistant to moisture or using a vapour barrier can help prevent this. 

Maintaining a consistent temperature in the garage is also crucial since rapid changes in temperature can cause condensation to form.

Finally, it’s important to regularly check for any signs of moisture or water damage and address them immediately to prevent further damage. By taking these steps, the garage will remain dry and protected from potential water damage, making it a safe and long-lasting space for storage or other activities.

How much does it cost to waterproof a garage?

Garage walls are especially vulnerable since they’re exposed to moisture. Waterproofing the wall will help keep garage possessions dry while extending the life of the building.

Tanking slurry

The tanking slurry is a type of waterproof membrane material used to coat walls and structures that can be exposed to high levels of water pressure or moisture.

It is applied in thick layers using a brush or sprayer and provides an effective seal against the seeping of water. The aim is to prevent any damage that dampness or flooding can cause.

Tanking slurry is a water-resistant aggregate and cement. The benefits of tanking slurry include how it’s a fast and cost-effective way of waterproofing. They can also withstand freeze-thaw cycles and other extreme weather conditions, so it’s perfect for garages in any climate.

More advantages include:

  • Protecting stored items and belongings
  • Warding off potential bugs
  • Helps maintain optimal air quality
  • Reduces mould growth on surfaces 

Interior

To effectively waterproof the internal walls, consider these steps:

Step 1 – Start by cleaning the walls

Scrub them with a mild detergent and rinse well with a hose or high-pressure washer (do so sparingly). Allow the walls to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 2 – Patch any cracks or holes

Use cement, concrete patching mix, or filler paste. A putty knife can spread the material over the hole. Ensure it’s pressed against the wall. Let it dry completely before continuing.

Step 3 – Apply an adhesive bonding primer to the garage walls

Using a brush or roller for even coverage. This will help ensure that waterproofing materials will stick properly to the wall surface and last longer than if applied without a primer first. Again, let this dry completely before proceeding.

Step 4 – Cover the floor with plastic sheeting

This will protect it from spills of waterproofing materials that will be applied shortly.

Step 5 – Go in with the tanking slurry

Apply the tanking slurry or a waterproofing paint and let it dry thoroughly between coats according to package directions. Once dried, go over with another coat of paint in a preferred colour to keep the inside of the garage looking fresh.

Waterproofing A Single Skin Garage – Simple Guide

Exterior

The exterior of the garage walls can use waterproofing in addition to the interior to prevent corrosion from water entering the surface. It can also prevent air leakage from outside, which can affect the temperature inside the garage.

Waterproofing the exterior walls is key. Individuals who wish to improve the longevity of their garage structures should consider this. As garages get older, water can seep through cracks and other openings in external walls.

Applying waterproof paint or sealant to the outside of the garage’s walls provides an effective barrier against this water infiltration. Tanking slurry will work best for this.

Waterproofing the bottom of the garage wall

Waterproofing the bottom of the garage’s internal walls can help prevent the weakening of its foundation, which causes costly damage.

This method protects against soil erosion which can further weaken garage foundations. Moreover, extreme water damage.

Waterproofing the bottom of the garage wall will help to keep out pests such as rodents and insects that could otherwise make their way in.

Waterproof garage wall panels

Waterproofing garage wall panels is a good idea to prevent water ingress that could lead to internal and external structural damage. It also helps to lock out heat and cold, reducing energy costs if the garage uses gas and electricity while keeping it more comfortable.

Additionally, it can add a layer of protection against pests that seek to make their way indoors.

To waterproof the wall panels, the walls require cleaning first. Once clean, apply a waterproofing product like a tanking slurry to the surface.

Allow time for the product to set before applying another coat or sealant to further protect the walls.

A non-toxic silicone sealant can also be added along any seams or cracks in the wall surfaces as an extra layer of protection against water damage.

Waterproofing garage door

When considering waterproofing a garage door, look for any cracks or gaps in the seals that could allow water to enter.

Also, check for any loose hardware or hinges that may need to be tightened up. Ensure that all weatherstripping is properly sealed around the edges of the door to prevent water from seeping through.

Individuals should also check for signs of deterioration from the water like rust, or rot. Finding areas that may need to seal will help with insulation from the elements. This makes it more comfortable during hot or cold weather.

Likewise, look for areas of mould or mildew and take steps to prevent them from forming. This can include using a dehumidifier, or running an exhaust fan when working in the garage.

Waterproofing garage floor

Waterproofing a garage floor is beneficial for many reasons. It helps to keep water, liquids and other chemicals from seeping into the ground. Preventing moisture from damaging any items stored in the garage.

It also helps to protect the foundation of the home, as water can cause significant structural damage over time. Additionally, waterproofing a garage floor provides a more stain-resistant surface, which makes it easier to clean.

Waterproofing a garage floor is a good idea when using paint. Not only does it keep moisture from seeping into the foundation, but it also adds aesthetic value.

Waterproof garage floor with tiles

Waterproofing the garage floor can be done using tiles. Depending on the tiles manufacturer, some can last up to ten years in the garage before they need replacing.

It’s a fairly simple process to complete, as long as the garage starts with a clean and smooth floor surface. thoroughly clean the garage floor surface.

Individuals can apply a primer to the garage floor before applying an epoxy-based adhesive to ensure that the tiles stick properly.

When the adhesive is tacky, place the tiles on the floor and firmly press them down into place.

Once dry, use a sealant or waterproof coating that doesn’t allow water or other liquids to penetrate the tile surfaces. The sealant will also not damage the underlying structure of the garage floor.

  • Floor tiles are very long-lasting
  • They offer better protection against damage to the floor compared to other materials.
  • Tiles are easy to install and remove 
  • They come in various colours and styles, allowing to create a more aesthetically pleasing garage space
  • The tiles can be installed over existing surfaces without the need for additional preparation or excavation

Cons of using tiles

  • Although individuals can apply these tiles over existing surfaces, it can be labour intensive
  • The tiles may show signs of wear over time, requiring maintenance and refinishing

Waterproof garage floor with a mat

To waterproof the garage floor with a mat, begin by sweeping the surface and removing any waste. Also remove items that live in the garage, a clean open space is needed.

Next, measure the floor and purchase a mat that is big enough to cover the entire area.

Once the mat arrives, lay it down on the garage floor and tape it securely in place along all of its edges.

Use sealant products designed for concrete floors to create a waterproof barrier between the mat and the concrete. Allow the sealant to lock in completely before walking on or placing any garage items back inside.

Cons of waterproofing garage floors with a mat

  • It may be costly depending on the type of mat chosen
  • If the mat has been damaged or is no longer needed, it may be difficult to remove
  • Although it prevents slipping, some mats can be slippery when wet
  • Not suitable for uneven surface areas, so consider how flat the garage floor is first before considering a mat on top.

Waterproofing the garage roof

To successfully waterproof the garage room from the internal and external areas:

From inside the garage

Choose a suitable waterproofing sealant material for the internal area of the garage roof. This can include:

  • Epoxy based sealer
  • Polyurethane based sealer
  • Waterproofing paint 

Clean the inside surface of the roof to ensure there is no dirt or dust present on it. Make any necessary repairs before applying the waterproofing product.

Apply the waterproofing sealant with a brush or roller and spread it evenly across the entire surface of the internal garage roof.

Let it set completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions before going ahead to cover up or paint over it if desired.

From outside the garage

Start by visually inspecting the garage roof to ensure there are no cracks or areas of potential water leakage problems.

If these problem areas exist, repair these places first with a waterproofing solution or a concrete patching compound. This can resolve larger-scale problems, for example, wide cracks in concrete casings along the edge of the roof line.

After fixing any damages, use a pressure washer to clean the surface of dirt and debris.

Wait for it to dry properly before applying a waterproof coating solution. Seal up any possible points of entry for water leakage from the roof into the exterior and interior garage walls.

Now apply a generous coat of waterproof coating on top of the existing roof membrane. A good technique is to start with vertical strokes first, then horizontal strokes. This ensures the entire top layer is fully covered against the:

  • UV rays
  • Rainwater
  • Other elemental factors

Allow an adequate amount of time for the solution-curing process afterwards. And if an additional sealing coat is needed, do that. This step is generally recommended only if the area needs extra reinforcing protection. 

Waterproofing concrete block garage

Waterproofing concrete block garage walls involves several steps. First, individuals should repair any cracks in the surface. The surface should also be clean, which can be achieved with a pressure washer.

Next, use a liquid waterproofing membrane such as the asphalt-based surface coating on top. A waterproofing sealant can then go over the concrete slab’s surface of the blocks to protect them from moisture penetration.

Attach the come along tool and the cable puller to the cable on the side of the door, either side will work Put some pressure on the cable and undue the hinges above the panel you are going to remove. Undo the bottom hinges as well. Crank the come along tool until there is a gap enough to remove the panel.

Step 3

After you remove the panel, you replace it with your new panel. And reverse all the procedures until your panel is fully installed and tightened down and the door is ready to be used again.

Wood panel doors are made in sections with routed grooves that the individual panels rest in. On top of the edges of each individual panel is quarter-round moulding. 

If it’s an individual panel within the panel itself then these are steps to take

What you will need;

  • Multi Tool/ wood blade
  • Circular saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Brad nailer
  • Wood panelling to cut the replacement piece from. 

Step 1

Lift the door to a position where you can work comfortably on the panel you are replacing. 

Carefully remove quarter-round moulding if any has been used.

Step 2.

The panel you are replacing is going to be in a routed groove, you want to use the multi-tool and cut one side of the groove out to be able to remove the panel.

Step 3

Remove the panel and use it as a template for a new piece. With the circular saw cut the new panel

Step 4

Place the new panel back into the opening. You will still have one side of the routed groove to hold the otherside in. 

Step 5

Reinstall the quarter-round moulding with the brand gun. Apply caulking to fill the gaps and to help secure the panel

Paint or stain to match existing color

Garage door bottom panel replacement

Replacing the bottom garage door panel may be one of the easiest panels to fix, although the manner in which it’s removed is done the same way. There are different ways to relieve the tension of the springs and the counterweight but for the sake of this article, the come-along and cable puller will be the method suggested. 

There are methods that can be utilised by using two hoists or two come along tools, but for the average DIY person having multiple types of these tools on hand is rare. And the two-hoist method seems to have a bit more potential for mistakes that could possibly cause injuries. 

Step 1

Raise the door a few inches and add some wood shims underneath the bottom panel 

Step 2

Attach the come along and cable puller to the cable on either side of the door and attach the C clamps on the panel rollers above the bottom panel.

Step 3

Add a bit of tension to the come along and then begin to remove the rollers and the bottom panel door hinges. Once the hinges are loose add more tension to the come along tool, which raises the upper section away from the lower bottom panel 

Step 4

Remove the old panel and replace it with the new one. Lower the door back down until the sections meet. Line up the doors and release the tension on the come along and reinstall each of the rollers and the hinges.

Step 5 

Raise the door and remove the wood from underneath the bottom door panel and lower the door back to the floor. Remove the come along and the cable puller, and the job is complete.

Fibreglass garage door replacement panels

Step 1

Raise the fibreglass door off the floor a couple of inches, it will make it easier to remove the panel or panels, using the vise grip clamps, attach a clamp above the panel you are going to remove on the track underneath a roller hinge, do the same on the other side in the exact same position.

Step 2 

Attach the come along tool and the cable puller to the cable on the side of the fibreglass door, either side will work. Put some pressure on the cable and undue the hinges above the panel you are going to remove. Undo the bottom hinges as well. Crank the come along tool until there is a gap enough to remove the fibreglass panel. The best part about the fibreglass panels is they are generally much lighter and easier to remove and replace. 

Step 3

After you remove the fibreglass garage door panel, you replace it with your new panel. And reverse all the procedures until your panel is fully installed and tightened down and the door is ready to be used again.

How to repair garage door panel

Sometimes the better option is to try and repair a damaged garage door instead of replacing the panel. It will depend on the severity of the damage of course, but it is a viable option, and it will save you a bunch of money over the long run. 

If the door will open there is still a possibility it can be repaired and not have to buy a replacement panel or replace the whole door.

If it’s cracking then more than likely this would happen to a wood-panelled door, so the repairs would be similar to other wood products that are cracked.

Here is a step-by-step process for repairing a cracked wood door panel:

  • Wood filler
  • Putty knife
  • Wire brush/ hard bristle brush
  • Sand paper
  • Refinishing materials/ paint or stain depending on which the door has on it

Surface Prep

Make sure the surface to be repaired is free from debris, loose paint or old caulking if any, before starting your repair. You can use a hard bristle brush, a scraper, or a putty knife to remove any obvious debris. 

Fill In The Hole Or Crack

Using an epoxy wood filler is the best solution here, with the putty knife apply the appropriate amount of filler to cover the crack or fill the hole. Spread the filler evenly so there won’t have to be a lot of sanding once the filler dries. Once the wood filler has dried, you can sand the surface smooth. 

Sand the surface and final the patch

Use fine-grit sandpaper and smooth the surface and prepare the surface for paint. The final process will be to replace any caulking that was removed, allow it to dry, and add a coat of paint

Repairing a bent garage door panel suggests that the garage door can still function correctly, and that opening and closing is not an issue. This is a determining factor in whether the door panel is to be repaired or replaced.  

Damage can be localised on one panel or may involve two or more, the decision to repair again depends on the ability of the garage door to function properly

Here are the steps to repairing a bent garage door panel.

Step 1:

You don’t want to hit the metal panel with anything that can further damage it. So before you begin to hammer out the dent, you will need to locate a piece of wood, a 2×4 or another smaller yet sturdy piece of wood will work. This wood will act as a buffer and a shock absorber between the hammer and the bend.

Step 2:

Place the 2×4 against the bend portion of the door and strike the wood, not the door. You will have to gauge the strength of the hammer blow depending on the size of the bend. The board will go up against the side of the door that is protruding outwardly. 

Hit the board until the bent area is back to its original position. You can gently tap out the wrinkles, if the bend hasn’t caused severe pinches in the metal. If this is unsightly and you don’t like the way it looks, you will need to replace the panel. 

Remember the board is there to protect the door from further damage and the strikes should start light and increase in force until the necessary force has been applied to straighten the bent door.

The garage door panels can be purchased at a big box hardware store if the door isn’t custom-made or made of specially made material. Generally speaking, the place where these doors were originally purchased should have replacement garage door panels.

That being said, if you don’t know the origin of the original purchase then you can look at the door itself and find the manufacturer’s name, and possibly the serial number of the door.

If that doesn’t work then you can measure the door panel, take a photo of the style and material and head out to one of the big hardware stores and ask about replacement panels for your door.

And as always there are online options for finding garage door panels, but the obvious problem with this is you’re buying something without actually seeing it in person. And that can always go wrong much quicker than having your eyes on the garage door panel in person.

Devices that have similar frequencies can interrupt the signal to your door If this is the case, try moving the remote away from other devices and see if that resolves the issue. Well, you’ve come to the right place, because in this post, I’ll be going over different scenarios on why the door is not opening and how to fix it..

I like to keep my introductions short and sweet, so let’s get into this.

Why is my garage door opener opening both doors?

Your Garage door opener remote is most likely at fault here, with a low battery or a programming malfunction. Otherwise, a frequency interference may also cause both doors to activate at the push of a single button.

Batteries

First-world problems? Well, a problem’s a problem, and this is a small, common but infuriating problem. Whether both doors are opening at the same time, or one door opens as the other closes, this shouldn’t be happening. 

But before you consider taking your frustrations out on your garage door, causing more damage, start your investigation process with something less arduous by removing and replacing the batteries from the door opener remote. Something so small and simple can often be the culprit in cases such as this, and this is commonly a quick and easy solution.

Programming malfunctions

After replacing the batteries if the problem still persists there may well be a problem elsewhere, with something potentially being wrong with the programming.

Programming malfunctions can happen on remotes and wall panels for a multitude of reasons; radio interference, low batteries and bad sequencing can throw this straightforward program into disarray. 

Even new batteries can cause such issues as the process of replacing batteries can sometimes make a remote control forget its original or pre-programmed state, making it operate incorrectly and erratically. 

Follow the instructions for reprogramming the buttons on the remote to the door opener and the relevant doors. 

The program option is usually found by going to the door opener and hitting the “Learn” button – as it’s most commonly known – and syncing the correct door to the desired button. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the procedure is carried out correctly. 

Why is my garage door opener opening on its own?

One of the most common reasons a garage door opens on its own is when dirt and grime builds up in the door opener remote causing it to stick and activate the door.

Remote buttons

Of course, there are multiple possibilities that could cause this unwanted event from happening, but it may be something as painless as your remote button on your remote being stuck in the “on” position, activating your opener sporadically or continuously. Cleaning your door opener remote buttons may immediately fix the issue. 

If not, you’ve tried the easy option and can rule this out, jumping onto the next possible solution. 

Looking after your door opener remote and panels, and keeping your opener buttons free of debris will ensure your opener doesn’t succumb to physical impairment and this may save you from running around trying to solve mysteries. You don’t want your garage door opening at all hours of the night.

Indoor panels

If your remote seems to be in perfect physical condition, you may have to look at the indoor panels. 

Make sure the buttons on the internal controls aren’t jammed or have anything leaning on them from any spring cleaning and reorganizing, or if something has fallen onto the panels hitting the buttons. 

Circuit breaker

If both the remote and internal controls are in good working order and free from any obstructions it’s worth resetting the circuit breaker. 

If there’s recently been a power cut in your area, this could have thrown off the signals and it may need to be reset from the board. The classic unplug it and plug it back in. It always (often…) works.

Other

Other possibilities include further interference from bad or loose wiring. The wiring could be knocked out of position or frayed over time and this may send your garage door into confusion mode, which we’ll talk about further down in this article.

Electronic interference may be to blame for your garage door opener’s lack of commitment to not opening when you want it to. 

Batteries

Or, your remote batteries may be on their way out. Always set out to try and fix something in the quickest and easiest way. Replacing the batteries is the number one go-to method when your door opener is working intermittently. 

It’s a possible solution for many different issues and it’s always worth a try. A two-minute job and you may be off to the races with a fully working garage door opener. 

Electronic interference

Electronic interference could also be the cause of your remote and door opener to continually lose signal with each other, causing them to disconnect and forget programming. 

The best solution for this is to reprogram your opener with your remote. Go back to the “Learn” button on the door opener and follow the manufacturer’s procedure, resetting the signals. Upon reprogramming, hopefully, you’ll have a fully functioning and cooperating garage door.

Garage Door Opener Flashing/Blinking/Flickering

Why is my garage door opener only opening halfway?

Your garage door may only be opening halfway due to blocked, jammed or uneven tracks. An incorrectly set limit switch may also be the cause of this unhelpful scenario. 

Trackways

When your garage door only opens half way, check the trackways to ensure there are no foreign objects blocking any movement. If something is blocking the rollers from moving, lower and close the garage door once more using the controls. 

Once the garage door is in its parked position carefully remove the obstruction. If everything seems free and clear, with nothing blocking the trackways, look for any scraping marks. 

This could signify misalignment in the tracks resulting in the rollers scraping the edge of the tracks as they rub heavily to one side. The pressure caused by this rubbing may stop your garage door from fully opening. 

Realigning the lopsided tracks and making sure no other moving parts have been bent or damaged in the process should loosen your track movement and allow your garage door to open fully and freely.

Limit switches

Limit switches could be a problem, causing your garage door to stop from fully opening. If recently installed, there may be a limit switch that wasn’t installed correctly or has fallen out of position. 

As part of regulatory safety features, garage door openers include multiple sensors. One of these limits will be set to send open signals. In the case of this sensor being out of position or wrongly set, readjust the limit switch to activate when fully open. 

This can be done by manually opening the door to its fullest extent, and by using a flat or phillips head screwdriver you can reset the positioning of this sensor. If in doubt, follow the garage door opener manual and instructions. 

Why is my garage door opener going up and down by itself?

One of the most common reasons a garage door may be opening and closing is the wiring may have short-circuited. 

As I mentioned earlier…confusion mode! With your garage door opening and closing all on its own, we’re getting into some spooky territory. Your home may be trying to talk to you. 

Check everything from your door opener remote to the wall panels inside. You’re now looking to make sure everything is in good condition and there are no noticeable faults, such as limit switches hanging out of position or wires hanging out of panels.

In the case of an electrical short circuit, this could be the result of bad weather or an unexpected power cut causing your electrics to go haywire. 

Damaged or faulty wiring may also be to blame. Anything from corrosion, water damage or even rodents can cause damage to wiring resulting in a breakdown. 

Even loose and unattached wiring could be at fault. Check the wall panes as well as any wiring leading to your door opener mechanism. 

If you’re not trained and confident in the handling of electrical equipment and you’re struggling to resolve this issue on your own, don’t hesitate to contact a professional technician to fix the problem. 

Garage door jerks when opening

Damage to tracks or pulleys may be the cause of your garage door jerking or shuddering when opening and closing. 

Mechanical problem

When your garage doors seemingly operate with no problem when pressing the door opener remote, this may immediately rule out an electrical or programming issue and point directly toward a mechanical problem. 

Mechanical snags such as jerking and binding may become more prevalent, as over time the inevitable wear and tear will occur with usage and age naturally damaging your garage door opener tracks and roller pulleys. 

A visual inspection will highlight any issues, showing any friction marks, dents or buckling. Your garage door tracks will be made up of several joining pieces, check to ensure there are no unwanted steps between track parts as well as loose fasteners or debris stuck in the trackways that could cause the usual smooth motion to jump over these pieces. 

Tracks may also be damaged or bent by manually forcing the garage door open or closed at an uneven angle, causing twisting that could result in the roller pulley wheels jamming and slipping up and down the track system as they move. 

Loose tracks can also happen over time with the vibration of the operation causing nuts and bolts to come loose, as a result, your pulley rollers may get caught and your tracks could buckle.

Damaged tracks may also occur by accidentally bumping them with your car or other heavy objects in your garage. 

Maintain your tracks and ensure they’re entirely rid of any obstructions ensuring they are kept clear, clean and lubricated. You may need your tracks realigned and at worst, replaced. 

Pulley rollers and cables

The pulley rollers and cables may also have been damaged with years of use and abuse. The natural wearing and usage could cause fraying and splitting of cables as well as cables coming out of alignment over time. 

If you notice worn or damaged pulley cables, be sure to replace them as soon as possible. Call a professional to ensure the best results. 

Pulley rollers and tracks that have not been well maintained and regularly lubricated may be prone to seizing. 

Applying a lubricant to these areas may be just the thing to loosen up your garage door and operate like new once more. It’s a quick and easy task and can help in preventing jerking and prolonging the life of your door opener kit.  

Garage door opener jammed

Your garage door is jammed and it could be caused by absolutely anything. Just make sure it’s unlocked first…

Locks

That’s right. Just like that time you tried to drive with the handbrake on, make sure all locks are unlocked before trying your door opener again. 

Some garage doors can be manually locked and this is easily done by you or anyone else turning the handle. Check it’s unlocked, then try again.

Obstruction

Just as with jerking and shuddering, this issue could be caused by damage to or obstruction in the tracks and pulleys. So much so that there’s a chance that the rollers have come off the tracks altogether causing the door to jam. 

Without the rollers in the tracks, there’s nowhere for them to move and therefore they can’t drive the door up or down. In this case, you may need some assistance with guiding the rollers back onto the tracks or a helping hand in the guise of a professional. 

When experiencing door jamming, always resort to applying lubrication to the tracks and rollers. Not only is this good for the general upkeep of your opener but it may just get things moving again.

Other

It’s not all mechanical with a jam, it could potentially be down to an electrical or appliance fault with the worst-case scenario being that your garage door opener may simply not be working. 

If the door is stuck in position and your remote and panels don’t seem to be helping the door move in any direction, call a technician before you manhandle the door and cause more harm than good.
