Do White Laminate Countertops Stain & Do they Hold up?

Yes, white laminate countertops get stained depending on their handling. The luster and sheen will not be affected if you clean the stains properly and timely with an appropriate stain remover. If you use strong bleach or cleaning agents to remove stains, it could discolor portions of the countertop.

It is important to understand that laminate counters are made by combining paper and resins to form different layers. These layers are later combined into a single plastic sheet under high temperatures.

The bottom layer is mostly Kraft paper (same as grocery paper bags), the middle of decorative paper and the top of some translucent paper sheets.

So, if you spill a strong liquid or place an item hot enough, you could damage the translucent top sheet of plastic which makes up the laminate countertop.

Spilling your tea, coffee or red wine on your countertop and not quickly cleaning could stain your countertop. Additionally, you could also stain your laminate countertop in the process of cleaning it.

If you use an acidic cleaner like bleach, chlorine, a tub and tile cleaner on your countertop, it can leave it looking etched or permanently discolored.

This is because the chemical agents making up these cleaners are strong enough to damage your countertop. Also, scrubbing brushes or scouring pads could stain it and leave it susceptible to further damage.

How to get rid of stains on white countertops

Using a laminate countertop can be a good way to save money as they are cheaper than most other types. However, if you’re opting for a laminate countertop, you would need to clean it regularly and appropriately to avoid getting it damaged.

There are three main types of cleaning for your white countertops.

Soap and water

Firstly, for the daily cleaning, you can use a soft cloth and a mild liquid detergent or a household cleaner on it. Pour a few drops of the cleaner on it and wipe it off with a soft rag to keep it looking crisp. Avoid using too much liquid cleaner or water as they cause damages to the seam of the laminate.

Water and vinegar

Secondly, occasional cleaning to care and remove greasy build-up. There are a few times when you’ve got a lot of cooking to do involving lots of oil and grease.

After such occasions, mix water and vinegar in equal proportions and wipe with a soft clean cloth to clean your countertops.

Specific material cleaner

You can also purchase a commercial kitchen cleaner to eliminate greasy stains on your white laminate countertops.

If you have a quartz material, go for a specifically designed quartz cleaner. This would be the best option over water and soap or any DIY cleaners.

Please keep in mind that vinegar may damage your countertop depending on the material.

Baking soda

To remove stains from tea or wine spills, you will need some baking soda. Mix baking soda and water or a household cleaner into a paste and apply it over just the soiled portion. Wipe off after a few minutes with a soft cloth and a little water.

If the stains persist, you can cover them with the paste and leave it to rest for a few hours before cleaning. You can also use cotton wool soaked in mild bleach or nail polish remover for ink stains.
